How To Add Padding To Recliner

I love my recliner. But over time, I’ve noticed that padding can start to become a little flat. This can make it more uncomfortable. Thankfully, there you don’t need to replace the recliner. All you’ll need to do is add some new padding. You should be able to do this yourself.

Step One: Open The Seams

First, you’ll need to find and open the seams in the recliner. This is where the padding is stored. In most cases, the seam will be where the cushion is connecting to the seat. To make this easier to see, you might want to turn the chair on its side.

Step Two: Remove The Seam

Once you’ve found the seam, you’ll need to start unpicking it. In many cases, there will be some metal staples which are holding the seam in place. You’ll need to carefully remove these. Before you do this, you might want to take a picture. You can use this for reference later when you need to seal up the seam again. Next, you’ll need to start removing the metal staples. When you’re doing this, you might want to use some tweezers, to give you a better grip. Then, you’ll need to remove the fabric carefully. Put this to one side, to make sure that it doesn’t get damaged.

Step Three: Remove The Old Padding

The next step of the process is to remove the old padding. In most cases, this will be stapled or stuck to the recliner. Take pictures, so you will know how to attach the new padding. If it’s in good condition, you might want to save it. You might be able to use it as stuffing for a pillow. However, if it’s in poor shape, you can throw it out. Take out all the padding. By the time you’re finished, you should be left with the boards that form the base of the chair.

Step Four: Add The New Padding

Now is the time to add the new padding to the chair. First, you’ll need to buy the right type of padding. There are a few types of padding to choose from. For example, you might want to get foam. In other cases, you might want cotton stuffing. It’s best to get the same type of padding that was in the chair originally. The type of padding you choose will impact the way you add it to the recliner.

If you are getting foam, you’ll need to measure up the dimensions of the old foam. This will tell you thickly you’ll need to cut it. When you’re ready, you’ll be ready to attach the foam to the chair. Usually, you will need to use glue to attach the foam to the recliner board. Before you glue it in, make sure that the foam will sit in place. You want to smooth out any bumps or lumps. Leave the glue to dry. Depending on how the original padding was attached, you might need to staple the foam into place.

In other cases, you might need to use cotton padding. In this case, you’ll need to stuff the chair with new padding. You might want to use a thin rounded stick, to help push the padding into the difficult-to-reach sections. As you’re doing this, refer to the photo you took of the original padding. In some cases, you might need to staple the new padding into place. Before you do this, check that it has been evenly distributed. Finally, fluff it up.

Step Five: Sew The Seams Closed

Finally, you’ll be ready to sew the seams closed. To do this, you’ll need to place the fabric over the new padding. Then, you’ll need to re-attach the fabric using the stapler. It can be a good idea to use your reference photo during this step. You’ll need to hold the padding in place while you are stapling the fabric. By the time you have finished this step, you should have an excellent re-padded section. Repeat this process on all the parts of the chair that need to have their padding fixed.

Caring For Your Padding

Once you’ve finished this process, you likely have a new appreciation for your recliner. You want to make sure that the padding lasts for as long as possible. There are a few ways that you’ll be able to do this. First, you’ll want to make sure that you are continuously fluffing the recliner. Like the pillows on your bed, the pressure of sitting in them can often make them flatter. This can make them less comfortable. Fluffing will add more air to the padding, solving this issue.

It’s also important to make sure that you are keeping the recliner pillows clean. If you accidentally spill a drink on them, you’ll need to clean it up immediately. A household cleaner should be suitable for most spills, preventing the fabric from becoming stained. If the pillows have started to develop an unpleasant smell, you might want to take the pillows outside. Lying them in the sun for a few hours should dry them out. This will remove the musty smells. Also, use a vacuum cleaner to get rid of any dust mites or dead skin cells.

It can also be a good idea to get removable covers made for the recliner. You can then remove these, wash them, and put them back onto the recliner. When these covers start to age, you can simply replace them and get new ones. You should be able to find these covers online.
